02.14.2016 - RPI Defeats Montclair; Jumps to 5th in the SECHL

TROY, NY – RPI hosted the Red Hawks of Montclair State University Sunday night, their second Super East Collegiate Hockey League (SECHL) opponent of the weekend. While both teams had clinched a Super East playoff berth, the Red Hawks and Engineers were separated by just one point. Rensselaer had found an offensive touch during their prior meeting with MSU, earning an 11 – 1 win in November. However, the Red Hawks possessed a fast, high-powered offense that had just put up seven goals on fellow SECHL member Marist College.

MSU attempted of assert their offensive pressure early when their leading goal-scorer, Samuel Enright, caught a stretch pass on the Engineers’ blue line and fired a shot over freshman netminder Liam McBain’s shoulder. However, the senior line of Patrick Quarry, Mike McGivney, and Tim Faulkner put RPI on the board eight minutes later. Quarry threaded a pass to McGivney in the slot, who fired a shot on net, where Faulkner was waiting to collect the rebound and knot the score at one. The game remained tied and even strength throughout the rest of the first and most of the second.

The stalemate was finally broken when the Red Hawk netminder Bobby Palzer attempted to clear the puck, but Quarry was able to intercept the pass and find the back of the empty net. Four minutes later, senior Teo Camadella found fellow senior Sean Sanford in front of the net, who backhanded it past Palzer to put the Engineers up by two entering the third.

Quarry tallied again 12 minutes into the third with help from Faulkner, and junior Kyle DeVault netted the fifth of the game, firing home a pass from senior Adam Hennick in the slot. Palzer faced 60 shots from the Engineers, turning aside 55. McBain stopped 22 of 23 shots while earning his ninth win of the season. This 5 – 1 win earned Rensselaer two points and secured fifth place in the SECHL. The Engineers travel to Floyd Hall Arena to face off against Central Connecticut State University in the quarterfinals of the Super East playoffs on Friday, February 19th at 8:10PM.
