11.21.14 - Engineers Drop Close Game to Montclair State

TROY, NY – RPI welcomed the Red Hawks of Montclair State University to the Houston Field House for a primetime 7:00pm face-off Friday night. 10 of Rensselaer’s 14 games prior to tonight had been decided by just a goal or less; Montclair would be the 11th.

The Red Hawks came into Friday’s matchup boasting an average of 6.1 goals per game; an impressive stat to say the least considering a schedule full of SECHL teams and others scattered throughout the top 15 in the ACHA D2 Northeast. The Engineers held Montclair scoreless for the first period.

Four minutes into the second period of this so-far scoreless game, freshman Tanner Richardson put RPI ahead with a screened wrist shot from the blue line; both junior Adam Hennick and freshman Kevin Yun recording assists on the play. But, just five minutes later the Red Hawks went on the powerplay and Travis Ritter notched the score at one, just fifteen seconds into the man-advantage. Rensselaer responded with a tally from freshman Louie Olivieri with just less than eight minutes to play in the period; the helper going to sophomore Kyle DeVault. However, following an Engineers’ powerplay, Montclair would, again, answer RPI with 36 seconds remaining in the period.

From the start of the final period, the score knotted at two apiece, both teams battled to control play and break the tie. Montclair State’s Andrew Latta would find the back of the net with 16 minutes remaining in the game. Rensselaer would go on the man-advantage and have several chances to erase the Montclair lead, yet time would expire before they could do so. Junior Spencer Whitehead stood tall in net against a formidable Red Hawk offense, denying 34 of 37 shots; whereas Montclair’s Bradley Odgers turned away 24 of 26 RPI shots on goal. Final score: RPI 2, MSU 3.
