10.25.14 - Siena Holds Renssealer to a Tie

LOUDONVILLE, NY – The Engineers were on the road Saturday evening. In this particular case, “on the road” referred to the 15 minute drive across town to the Albany County Hockey Facility that the Saints of Siena called home. The ice surface was much wider as well as much colder and harder; play would move considerably faster than that at the Houston Fieldhouse. The faster pace of play favored the quickness and speed of Rensselaer as they pressured Siena from the opening faceoff.

Just minutes into the matchup, RPI would find the back of the net off a rebound in front. However, the goal would be disallowed by the officials on account of the puck being kicked into the net. Nevertheless, RPI had their share of chances and continued to battle in the offensive zone. The period would end, tied at zero; but not for much longer.

Two minutes into the second period, RPI threw a soft shot on net to a cluster of players where junior Adam Hennick, with the help of linemates Louie Olivieri and Connor Blake, would emerge and, with one stickhandle, roof the puck over the Saints’ netminder, Jarred Davis. The Engineers continued to test Davis, but penalties would, again, take away from their momentum. Down two men, RPI did their best to protect junior Spencer Whitehead in goal. But, with five seconds remaining on the penalty, Siena’s Brian Sisti knotted the score at one.

The remaining 28 minutes of play saw several Rensselaer chances to take the lead, but the bounces were not in their favor. Hennick rang a shot off the post and Davis barely stopped sophomore Kyle DeVault from finding the back of the net on a breakaway with less than half of the third period remaining.

Extra time would be needed to decide this one. The Engineers were a man up for two of the five overtime minutes, but a couple key blocked shots by the Saints would hold off the Engineers from putting home a game-winner. Whitehead stopped 27 of 28 Siena shots on goal in an impressive performance. However, Rensselaer couldn’t seem to find the back of the net; RPI 1, Siena 1.
