02.27.16 - Rensselaer Drops Close Game to 5th-Ranked Northeastern

DANBURY, CT – With the Super East Collegiate Hockey League (SECHL) playoffs behind them, the Engineers traveled to Danbury Ice Arena for their second appearance in the ACHA Northeast regional playoffs. Earning the 8th seed out of nearly 60 teams in the Northeast, Rensselaer took the ice with 5th-ranked Northeastern University. The last time RPI had faced-off against the Huskies was three years prior, during the Northeast Collegiate Hockey Association (NECHA) playoffs. The NECHA is a division within the ACHA Northeast, similar to the SECHL, in which Northeastern is often a top contender.

The Engineers expected a fast-paced, physical game against the Huskies, and from the drop of the puck this expectation held true. Both teams battled to take control of this contest, each earning their share of chances in the first period. However, it would be Northeastern to find the back of the net first, capitalizing on a rebound mid-way through the period. The Engineers fought to reverse the momentum, but entered the locker room down by a goal.

The start of the second period saw Northeastern seem to gain an advantage over Rensselaer, trapping them in their zone and forcing longer shifts. Eventually, the Huskies took a two-goal lead as a result of their continued aggressive forechecking. Sensing their season slipping away, RPI began to increase their pressure, and was able to generate several offensive opportunities, but they were unable to close the gap in the second.

With 20 minutes remaining, and a two-goal deficit to overcome, the Engineers continued to pressure the Huskies, and were able to cut the lead to just one. A face-off in Rensselaer’s offensive zone was taken by Sam Mannion, his only face-off of the game. He won the puck back to linemate Teo Camadella, who fired a wrist shot from the top of the left circle that rang the right goal post and then found the back of the net. With the momentum in their favor, the Engineers played to extend their season, but were unable to tie the game. Final score: Rensselaer 1, Northeastern 2.
